Maxwell Cohen

This afternoon, Friday September 6, 2013 EMER-G-MED's M07, M03, TM01, RV03, RV06 and A01 responded to a serious MVA on Main Road heading North just after Witkoppen in Fourways. Paramedics arrived to find that a Maserati sports car had gone under a truck, carrying fecal matter, which was allegedly illegally attempting a U-turn in peak hour traffic.

There were two occupants in the Maserati, the driver sustained moderate injuries and the passenger was critically injured and heavily entrapped.

The Lonehill Fire Department were called to the scene and after a two-hour cut-out and extrication the patient was freed from the vehicle and paramedics further assessed the patient's condition.

It was established the patient had suffered multiple critical injuries, including a serious head, spine, abdominal, pelvic and chest injuries. As well as burns to the face and chest caused by battery acid and oil.

Multiple advanced life support procedures and interventions were performed on scene and the patient was transported to Sunninghill Hospital by A01 under a ‘Lights and Sirens’ escort in a critical condition. The driver was also taken to Sunninghill Hospital by another service.

The driver of the truck was taken into custody by the South African Police Services on charges of reckless and negligent driving. Two other drivers who ignored the paramedic's road-closure were also arrested.

Please be patient if emergency services close a road. It is done only when absolutely necessary and is against the law to ignore it. Paramedics and emergency workers do it only to protect the workers and patients as well as keep the scene intact for police investigation.
